Mercury CafeThe Mercury Café -- known to locals as The Merc -- is a restaurant, bakery, coffeehouse, bar, dance club, and concert hall. It is hard to pinpoint the exact style of this eclectic nightspot, serving up everything from Celtic and Cajun to theater and poetry. Swing and salsa bands are regulars on the second floor, and the main dining room might feature a concert pianist one evening and a string quartet the next.

Denver Museum of Nature and ScienceThe Denver Museum of Nature & Science has always lured fascinating temporary exhibitions—including Titanic treasures and Egyptian artifacts. But its permanent displays are intriguing as well, always interactive, educational and entertaining. Here, visitors can learn about space, wildlife, ancient mummies and other workings of the world. Discovery Zone keeps younger children occupied with hands-on activities that include dressing up like a dinosaur and digging for fossils. The gigantic-screened IMAX Theater is next door, as is Gates Planetarium for out-of-this-world views. The entire complex is located in central Denver's City Park with welcomed free parking…along with plenty of trees, ponds and terrific views of the Rocky Mountains.

Denver Botanic GardensSometimes people in the middle of a metropolitan area just want a quiet place to walk and relax—and the Denver Botanic Gardens facility is an ideal retreat. Open year-round, the facility is partitioned off into separate collections with plants and flowers from alpine to aquatic, desert to tropical. A charming Japanese garden is a perennial favorite. For the average gardener, this is a chance to gain planting and setup ideas, or conservation tips. Those with a more scholarly slant can get detailed specifics from an enthusiastic staff. The venue is a Denver favorite for outdoor summer concerts, plus year-round classes and activities. Temporary exhibits and special events such as the annual Blossoms of Light holiday display and seasonal plant sales dot the calendar. Visitors can also experience Botanic Gardens' satellite locations scattered about Denver: a nature preserve at Chatfield Reservoir, alpine tundra at Mount Goliath and Centennial Gardens, a Colorado-based display with a French twist.

Coors FieldBuilt in 1995 at a cost of $215 million covered by sponsor Coors Brewing Company and local tax dollars, Denver's baseball-only stadium is a standout. Anyone who visits Coors Field gets an enjoyable experience, baseball fan or not. Games have a festive air no matter how the home-team Colorado Rockies perform and the facilities are kept sparkling clean. Guest Relations ushers are friendly as they chat about the team, hand out suntan lotion and even spritz fans with water during warm afternoons. The venue holds 50,000, with a row of purple seats circling the stadium at exactly 5,280 feet above sea level—the Rockies' tribute to Denver's "Mile High City" nickname. Mountain views are plentiful from the first-base side, The Rockpile is a fun time in bleacher seats for only a few dollars, and club-level fans get personalized food-and-beverage service. In addition to concessions stands around the stadium, visitors can also grab a beer at onsite Sandlot Brewery. Stadium tours are available year-round, focusing on Rockies history plus a look behind the scenes.

Cherry Creek Shopping CenterFor discriminating shoppers, Cherry Creek North can't be beat in Denver. The area on the north side of First Avenue embodies the good life, made up of a series of upscale boutiques and venues that include retail apparel, fine art, jewelry and a renowned shop of children's toys. There are a number of luxe salons and spas, even a cigar haven. Restaurants tend to revolve around creative cuisine, whether it's a grill, John Elway's steakhouse or a sushi bar. But it's not only for the highest tax bracketsÂ…scattered among the high-end venues are signs of normality that include Starbucks and even a Burger King. Cherry Creek North is the site of a nationally recognized summer arts festival, as well as a holiday outdoor ice rink, plus A Taste of Cherry Creek and other special events throughout the year.

Downtown AquariumRevamped in 2005, formerly known as Ocean Journey and newly renamed Downtown Aquarium has won over Denver visitors. The facility sits on 18 acres, with 500 species of both lake and saltwater creatures on view, plus corresponding land critters that include three resident tigers. Visitors can safely touch stingrays and avoid the sharks at the beach exhibit, or pan for gold in the Northwest Experience display. Watch dive demonstrations, or take part in a "Swim with the Fish" adventure experience onsite—no dive certificate required. At Aquarium Restaurant, guests are seated around a 150,000-gallon aquarium with a variety of fascinating fishes swimming nearby (don't worry, they aren't slated for the menu).

Molly Brown HouseThe "Unsinkable" Molly Brown's saga of Titanic survival was portrayed on the big screen and her vivid life story lives on inside her restored 1889 Denver residence. The Molly Brown House is set up with rooms that closely resemble the way she furnished it, along with exhibits chock-full of her unique and elaborate accoutrements. Hosts get into the spirit with Victorian costumes as they guide visitors through the three-story structure in 45-minute tours geared toward a cozy, personalized experience. The museum houses a gift shop, decorates for the holidays and sponsors a number of special events throughout the year, including popular high teas and a Titanic-themed dinner.

Denver Art MuseumIn 2006, the Denver Art Museum expanded to a total of 350,000 square feet and did it with flair, connecting the original structure with the newly constructed Frederic C. Hamilton Building across the street. The contemporary exterior with enclosed walkway is strikingly situated over 13th Avenue. Always known for its permanent collection of American Indian and pre-Columbian art, the museum now holds 60,000 works and continues to attract additional temporary exhibitions—from historic baseball photos to borrowed treasures from The Louvre. Interactive displays, tours and children's activities are marks of a venue dedicated to making art more accessible and relatable to the general public. Annual wine-focused "DAM Uncorked" serves as both a fundraiser and must-attend event. Generally, museum gift shops are a treat and the one located inside the Denver Art Museum is no exception—as is its onsite, creatively casual restaurant Palettes.
